TAKING CLASSES (AND STUDYING) IS BETTER THAN *JUST* READING BOOKS I've concluded that if you are in the mood to study books, it's *much* better to take a class than to read books on your own. That's the way the industry is set up. Taking classes counts for something, but solid knowledge from reading books counts for less. If you can pass tests at interviews, that helps a lot

There is one that is priceless if you have the talent, but timeconsuming to develope and you seem to want to be there yesterday. That ability is one of graphic art and design. Anybody and write HTML documents. With a little time and application, anybody can learn to program Java _applet_s (especially if they already have traditional programming skills) but designing effective pleasing graphics is something else again. If you can manage that one along with the others you'll have an excellt chance of rising to the top. Agreed. HTML _is_ easy to learn and code, but creating an atractive and easy to use web site is a completely different matter, and something that people _will_ pay alot for, whether you know CGI/Java or not. Just look at the web, 99% of sites out there are really really ugly and hard to navigate. Now I'm sure that everyone who made those pages had a pretty good grasp of HTML but that obviously isnt enough to make a killer web site. Content and design are what sets the 'ordinary' apart from the 'extra-ordinary'. As far as Java goes, I wouldnt be too quick to declare it _the_ programming language of choice, why not learn C++ and give yourself a skill that is truly portable and valued? -Nic The Quake Stomping Grounds http://www.stomped.com

TAKING CLASSES (AND STUDYING) IS BETTER THAN *JUST* READING BOOKS To take it one step further, actually designing and writing code is better than just taking classes and reading books. Classes can be useful for people at all levels of expertise, but nothing beats The Real Thing. If I was hiring a developer, I'd be much less interested in what classes have you taken lately vs. what classes have you _written_ lately..

Just look at the web, 99% of sites out there are really really ugly and hard to navigate. This is the domain of human computer interaction (HCI), not graphic design. To make an 'easy to use' site, you need to understand the psychology of the user, and this is much more than making pretty graphics. Let's face it, the idea that one person can contain all the skills that's needed to design a terrific web site is naive. It's a team effort, combining skills from computer science, HCI, graphic design and marketing. If someone DOES have all these skills, they're doing the work of 5 people so they probably do deserve a 6-figure salary!

I couldn't have said it any better. I am finishing my book on typography, graphics and graphic design for the Web. It should be out in about two months. If you are interested in these topics drop me an e-mail and I'll let you know where and when you can purchase it. Dave

And because of that, include me on your mailing list. When it comes out I'll put a plug in our htmlZine for you. P.S. You forgot to put the comp.infosystems.www.authoring.images newsgroup in the addressing and you could've skipped the comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi just for future reference.
