I don't know if this is the right group to ask, but I'm unaware of any that deals with this kind of problem. IF you know a group which can help me, please point me there. Anyhow, my question: I'm fixing an old, no-frills go-kart for a friend, and everything seemed to go well until I tackled the engine. The engine itself runs OK, and it's not the problem. The problem lies in connecting the engine to the go-kart. I read up on the subject, and found out that you needed a centrifugal clutch so that the go-kart can idle and not run off when starting, etc. So I bought the right clutch (third time's a charm...), connected it to the shaft of the engine, and then connected a chain from the small 10 tooth gear on the clutch to the big 72 tooth (IIRC) gear on one of the back wheels. Right then and there I had a problem: the chain was too loose and it keeps flying off. It seems to be too long by 1/2 a _link_; removing an entire _link_ makes the chin too short and it won't fit. I'm stumped. How do I fix this problem? I can't shorten the chain by half a _link_. I have the right chain, clutch, gears, etc. and I'm not sure how this problem came up. I'm considering replacing the 10 tooth gear on the clutch with a 13 tooth gear; would this solve the problem of the chain being too loose? Iff this were the answer, how do I swop gears? The 10 tooth gear is held in place by a snap ring; would undoing this get the gear off? The clutch fits a 5/8 shaft, #35 bore. Thank you!

I can't shorten the chain by half a _link_. actually, yes you can. They sell 1/2 _link_s for most standard chain sizes

go-karts back when I played with them...) The side-plates of the _link_ are joggled or kinked to make the half-_link_ fit properly. The long term fix is to make/buy a proper engine mount that has slots for chain adjustment.

effects. Is this a bad idea? Not a problem. Try and use the same kind of oil, forever and aye. You probably do want to chose something with a large viscosity index (10w-40 for example), if you run it longer than a half hour. Those little gasoline engines don't have a very good way to cool down, so the oil can get really thin. David A. Smith
